The unsolved mystery of the Invisible, Inc. patch

Invisible, Inc. is a game I dip into now and again, the last time being a month or so ago. I don’t pay much attention to it between play times, though, so I didn’t notice exactly when the 357 MB patch came out.

It’s a small game; that patch is a little under a quarter of its install size. It should have been notable.

I can’t find any notes about it.

There’s nothing about it on Steam. The closest I found was a recent forum post speculating that the game doesn’t run on Windows 11, except that I was playing it on a Windows 11 machine a month ago and know better.

There’s nothing on the developer’s page about it either, and their forums have dried up and died; that link you might have noticed to “Latest Patch Notes” is actually about a bugfix from 2016.

Searching showed me some Redditors wishing for new features two years ago, and not much else that was even that relevant.1 A fan wiki told me nothing, and SteamDB lists no updates in the last five years… while also showing a “last recent update” on December 19.

That SteamDB “change number” lists a whole lot of unrelated games with no explanation, but at least there’s some documentary evidence that I didn’t just imagine downloading a 357 MB patch.

December 19 was the start of the Steam Winter Sale, but that’s a coincidence. None of my other installed games which are on sale needed similar mystery updates, nor has anything similar happened with any other Steam sale in my (mumble) years of PC gaming.

…and I just played a mission, had no trouble, and noticed no changes, with at least two of the Workshop mods I use (UI Scaler and Prisoner Outfits) working as before. (The “make Draco suck slightly less” mod is harder to test, but Draco’s performance was consistent with the mod description.)

This all adds up to… what?

I’m somewhat annoyed. I’d be more annoyed if the update had bricked the game without explanation, but still, I like to know how the programs I use are changing.

  1. At time of writing, the devs had updated an Invisible, Inc.-related page four days ago… their merch shop.
