I still think that, if I had to pick one recent deportation outrage to call “the most outrageous,” I’d go with Mohsen Mahdawi because that case most blatantly lays bare the feds’ lies. Showing up at a government office and “finalizing his U.S. citizenship” is the polar opposite of illegal immigration, and this case shows more clearly than all the others that the alleged humans who comprise the government do not give a shit about illegal immigration or any of the other things they claim to be combating or protecting. And for bonus points, he’s a bit like Rumeysa Ozturk in that he seems to have been put on ICE’s shit list for having wrongthink about the war in Gaza.
…but if I had to pick two “most outrageous” cases, these children would be the second one.
VML’s mother was recently deported – while checking in at her local immigration office, which sounds like some level of law-abiding to me – and VML was sent with her. “The parents made the decision to take the child with them to Honduras,” a government flack said.
One problem with that: VML’s father was not deported. The stories I’ve seen don’t say much about his status, but he’s still around and VML is – or effectively was – a U.S. citizen.
To complete the picture: VML is a two-year-old girl.
Contrary to what some have been saying on social media, VML was not being treated for cancer. That was another citizen with family still in the country, a four-year-old boy. With, I repeat, cancer. Who got stuffed onto a plane to Honduras. (…which may not even be their final destination.)
No one running this meat grinder seems to have given two seconds’ thought to the possibility of letting these small children – too young for even them to call gang members – stay in the country with their lawfully resident families. Because, to reiterate, the feds don’t give a shit; they’re too busy seeing how quickly they can fill planes with toddlers, pregnant women, peaceful protesters, and whoever else they choose to pretend is a threat to society.
