Standing headline: a recent Windows update sucks

The headline from Bleeping Computer says enough:

Microsoft: Windows updates make password login option invisible

The official Microsoft workaround is to mouse over where the invisible button should be. (And if you don’t have that memorized, then you’ll find it sooner or later, I guess. Assuming, of course, that the mouseover works.)

I was tempted for a second to wonder if this was some kind of conspiracy — Microsoft is on the “kill the password” bandwagon, and only password users are affected by this. But no, Microsoft is just serially incompetent, as the story goes on to remind us; in the last few months, Windows updates have fucked with DVD and Blu-Ray playback, streaming video playback, app installation, installation of other updates, and the reset and recovery options on Windows 10.

…none of which I had any chance of suffering from personally, because I set my home internet connection to “metered.” And every time I see a story like this, I get to feel safe and clever using my only moderately rage-inducing year-and-a-half-old Windows install.
