So New Zealand’s government will fine travelers four figures if they don’t give up their passwords, because smuggling.

No, they aren’t concerned about people smuggling things inside electronic devices, because that would at least be amusingly stupid. No, they want the ability to search everyone’s phones and computers to see who might be affiliated with organized crime, because dragnet tactics are highly effective at crimestopping and not at all oppressive. (That was sarcasm.)
